After 9 months of planning, we began this bathroom remodel consisting of a tub to shower conversion and new vanity, plus removal of a built-in cabinet for a retired couple in a senior only subdivision.
Unfortunately, about halfway into the project and ready to make some final design decisions, the husband entered the hospital. Sadly, he died about a week after Christmas.
Somehow, our now, widowed client, managed to soldier on with much crying and hugs from myself and my guys. Every time we went to her with an update or design decision, she would say to us, “You know, he really wanted me to have this bathroom.” And then the crying would really start.
In the end, the client is super happy about the remodel and I have to say it is the remodel I am most proud of for numerous reasons.
Project Statement:
The biggest part of the project was removing an existing deck mounted bathtub that was unsafe for the older couple to use. We converted it into a walk-in shower with a low curb threshold to make it easier to get into. A seat was added in the corner with a hand held shower so someone could sit down and wash off if they didn’t have the strength to stand for long periods of time. There is a separate transfer valve so that the regular showerhead or the handheld shower can be turned on beforehand to warm up the plumbing.
Glass block was used in the new wall to allow light to enter the bathroom, mimicking the existing glass block window. Ceramic tile that imitates Venetian marble was selected that included a darker accent square. Oil rubbed bronze fixtures seemed the natural choice to highlight the darker accent squares.
A custom vanity with center tower section was made to replace the existing vanity that had a makeup table that was no longer being used. Rollout shelving was added to make it easier to access storage under the sink. Custom matching wood mirror frames were also fabricated to match the new vanity.
Colors used were “Champagne” with a brown glaze. The upper center drawers were selected as a “pillow top” drawer front so there wouldn’t be an excessive amount of glazed used in a small area keeping the look of the vanity “softer”.
Additionally, a built-in cabinet was removed from the wall near the shower and a few can lights were added. The towel bars that were added are actually full strength grab bars in case someone should lose their footing they would not be able to rip normal towel bars out of the wall and fall down.
The existing floor tile was saved since it matched the décor of the house and the wall color as well. This helped to keep the cost down to a reasonable level.
Throughout the project a neutral color palette was used which tied in well with the rest of the house. The finished master bathroom is now the jewel of the bathroom, but it does not look out of place and looks like it was built originally with the house.
